Information about Avalanches (check dictionary for unfamiliar words)

Avalanches are a significant mountain hazard. In the United States, avalanches are responsible for more deaths each year than earthquakes.

Once an avalanche is in motion, the powerful force of snow slides down the mountain, snapping off mature trees and easily destroying buildings.

When an avalanche finally stops, the snow is like concrete, making rescue efforts extremely difficult and chances for survival slim.
